PORTS OF CALL - Asia

Langkawi Island, Malaysia

Let your imagination soar with the magical myths and legends surrounding the 99 islands of Langkawi. Replete with ancient geological wonders like mysterious caves and mist-shrouded mountains, this premier vacation destination is an absolute tropical paradise endowed with a beauty that only nature's variety can offer.

Don’t Miss

You don't need to be a marine biologist to appreciate the pristine beauty of Pulau Payar Marine Park. Located about 19 nautical miles south of Langkawi, you'll find everything from long, sandy white beaches and crystal-clear water to lush rainforests and exotic vegetations. The park includes an underwater coral garden, where you can swim and snorkel with the multi-coloured fish. If you prefer to keep dry, simply rent a glass-bottomed boat to observe this wondrous underwater world.

Sporting Adventures

There's plenty to do for the more adventurous, active traveller. Let a captain drop you off at a small island of your choice and spend the day observing wildlife, such as deer, monkeys and iguanas native to the island. Or you can try your hand at a more traditional activity. Langkawi is a golfers' paradise with a number of challenging courses. Other aesthetic adventures include sailing amid calm, moderate winds and horseback riding through lush jungles and picturesque mountains.

Local Flavours

The dishes served on Langkawi are as diverse as the culture of the area. Local chefs utilise a wide variety of flavours, ingredients and cooking methods from all parts of the world, like the Australian classic, shrimp on the barbie, or German bratwurst and potatoes. And because Thailand is right around the corner, you'll find a delicious mixture of Malay and Thai, creating a truly unique blend of tastes. Add in the beauty of the surrounding area and prepare for an enormously delightful culinary experience.

Shopping for Bargains

A plethora of duty-free outlets and souvenir shops can be found in the central commercial area in Kuah, the main town of Langkawi. Many stores and malls in this area are dedicated to bringing you both international and local products for the lowest price possible. However, souvenir hunters might have better luck sifting through the markets along the harbour front, where you'll find handcrafted merchandise and unique treasures.

Currency

Langkawi's currency is the Malaysian ringgit. Many of the shops and restaurants take major credit cards.
