PORTS OF CALL - Asia

Hanoi (Haiphong), Vietnam

As Vietnam's capital city for almost a thousand years, Hanoi has long been considered the country's cultural centre. This charming, slow-paced hub is located on the right bank of the Red River and is home to beautiful lakes and shaded boulevards. Hanoi's many museums, embassies and holy shrines that commemorate the late Ho Chi Minh reveal the rich history left behind by its storied dynasties. However, with new high-rises going up, and cars and motorbikes multiplying daily, it is also a city bursting into life. Life in Hanoi is getting faster all the time.

Don’t Miss

Whether you're travelling with kids or are just a kid at heart yourself, make a point to catch a performance at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. Locally known as Mua Roi Nuoc, it's a charming series of tales about Vietnamese life as told through brightly coloured puppets standing on a water-filled stage. Just getting by on your little Vietnamese phrase book? You're in luck - these classic stories carry universal themes that can be understood by all.

Sporting Adventures

While many visitors consider crossing the bustling streets of Hanoi an adventure in itself, you'll find most of the actions bright and early on the shores of scenic Hoan Kiem Lake. Try taking part in one of the fast-paced, competitive badminton games if you dare. Or maybe you're looking for more tranquil exercise, like tai chi, practised daily by Hanoi's young and old alike. Just watch and learn!

Shopping for Bargains

Top off your visit to Hanoi with some serious shopping in Dong Xuan Market. Among its huge array of inexpensive goods, this wholesale centre boasts of beautiful silk embroidered bags, neckties and scarves that are a steal. Stock up and bring a little bit of Hanoi home to family and friends without breaking the bank.

Local Flavours

For a true taste of Hanoi, you must try the cha ca (grilled minced fish), a dish invented by Hanoi's own Doan family more than 100 years ago. Often made with fish varieties like sturgeon and tuna, cha ca is a dish you can tailor to your taste by throwing in your favourite condiments and herbs.

Currency

The Vietnamese currency is the dong. You can exchange currency in any of the following ways: at a bank, through an authorised exchange bureau or at a hotel reception desk. The best rates are at the banks, but exchange bureaus are the most convenient option, as they're open for longer hours. Most major credit cards should be accepted in almost any major city or popular tourist spot.
